Newsweek came out with their annual ranking of top high schools nationally. This year they have revamped their methodology, resulting in some significant moves for some local high schools. You can see last years rankings here , and 2009 rankings here .

New Methodology

Because of the new methodology, Milton High School moved up the ranks considerably, from 313 in 2010 to 176 this year. What is also notable are the north Atlanta schools that did not make the list this year: North Gwinnett, Alpharetta, Wheeler, Roswell, Northview, Duluth and Lassiter.

I think the changes they made make a great deal of sense. Each school’s score is comprised of six components: graduation rate (25%), college matriculation rate (25%), AP tests taken per graduate (25%), average SAT/ACT scores (10%), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10%), and AP courses offered (5%).
